I was down there today as we are having talks with the trust that owns the old north Woolwich station about making that a new home for the Thames ironworks. Lovely building, grim area still.

They went to local people, but local in the sense that they'd recently moved into the area from abroad and were happy to work for terrible money and live in the same bedsit as 20 other people.

Hello Eddie I have been very busy hence I don't come on here much. its a shame for E16 , things like excel and airport promised much and delivered little apart from low paid jobs, hardly any of which went to local people. charley you mention quite a few names there, I don't think any of the old families are left round there. like I say it was rough years ago but it was a tighter community in fact I think people were tougher way back as they were not as spoilt and mollycoddled as they are now.

I was born in Custom House lot of boxers around, the Reddings Varley rd same as cockney rejects. Tibbs had a scrapyard and a pub in Custom house. Glen Murphy had wallpaper shop in Prince Regents Lane. The Kaylors were in Baxter Road. Billy Williams was Jenkins Rd although that was probably in Plaistow

E16- my old stomping ground. Don't believe its gonna turn into paradise it wont sorry Gavros et al. what have city airport, excel etc done for the area ? Nothing its still a dump, always was rough. difference was it was a different rough no mugging crap etc, plenty of crime and crooks but not like the pussies nowdays. people mention hackney etc, it don't matter how many artisan bakeries and craft beer pubs open up its still got the nastiness around it, all that's happening is the councils are off loading some of the shit out of the boroughs.

Think there's a law that's been passed in Newham stating that if you're Polish and outside you must only walk in groups of 2-4 all carrying cans of lager.

If you mean yuppified by groups of black teenagers on every street corner (mainly outside the chicken shops) and most streets being over run by eastern europeans then yes, its very much yuppified.

I remember going to see the Mekons back in 1980/81 at Chat's Palace in Homerton, me and my brother went into a boozer round the corner before the gig and there was a geezer standing at the bar, probably in his 50s, with both his hands on the bar, his arms straight out in front of him. We must have been in there for an hour and the cunt never moved once. It was like going back to 1955 !

Ive been looking at places close to the station as an investment before the crossrail opens. there's loads of tarquins and ophelias looking around there. mark my words within 3 years it'll start to look very different.
